I shot John Maus for the cover and the interior feature of this month’s Musikexpress, the German edition of Rolling Stone, while he was here in Toronto for NXNE (with Friends, Oberhofer, and Diiv on the same bill — good show). We hung out in his hotel before going to Lee’s and did the cover shot and a bunch of great location portraits, but I knew the image I really wanted was John post-show, in all his sweaty, manic, “karaoke show” glory. NXNE wasn’t allowing photographers backstage at Lee’s, but I explained the picture to both John and the location manager, and they both loved the idea, so in the seconds after he came offstage I was brought through the curtain and allowed to take a short series of portraits, one of which you see in the magazine, and another on the right above. Sometimes your vision intersects with opportunity and a bit of good luck, and in those moments I love being a photographer.

I did the press photos and this funny little video for Camp Schecky: A Play on a Bus, Now Magazine’s top pick for the 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival.
